The story

Founded in 1940, this museum belongs to Deccan College in Pune and is one of the city's main places to learn about early Indian history. Its six galleries follow human life on the subcontinent across the long sweep of prehistory, with material from the Stone Age and from the Mesolithic, Chalcolithic and Megalithic periods.

Alongside the prehistoric collections there are displays on archaeology, ethnography and epigraphy. The museum also works as a research resource, giving scholars access to original finds from excavations in many parts of India. Teachers can join workshops and lectures on archaeology, while general visitors are offered exhibitions and slide shows about the country's ancient heritage.
