Prithviraj Smarak is a memorial on a hill in Ajmer dedicated to Prithviraj Chauhan, also known as Prithviraja III, the 12th-century Chauhan king who ruled Ajmer and Delhi. It honours him and the Rajput warriors who fought beside him, and its height gives broad views over the city and the ring of Aravalli hills.
The centrepiece is a black stone statue of the king on horseback, the horse shown with a front hoof lifted as if moving forward, and a garden next to it is used for resting. Prithviraj led an alliance of Rajput rulers that defeated the Ghurid army of Muhammad of Ghor at Tarain in 1191. Muhammad came back in 1192 with mounted Turkish archers and won on the same field, a battle that marked a turning point in the Islamic conquest of north India and inspired many half-legendary accounts.
