01 — The story

The story

Soniji Ki Nasiyan, also called the Ajmer Jain Temple, is dedicated to Adinath, or Rishabhnath, the first Jain Tirthankara. It is often called the golden temple because of the gilding used throughout, said to amount to about 1,000 kg of gold.

A red sandstone gateway with jharokhas leads to a marble staircase decorated with images of Tirthankaras. Murals of Adinath's life cover the walls, and the white marble main idol of Adinath sits in the samavasharana posture. Behind the shrine is the Swarna Nagri, a two-storey hall of gilded wooden figures showing the Jain idea of the cosmos and the five great events of Adinath's life, the panch kalyanak. It also includes models of Ayodhya and Prayagraj, a Mount Sumeru and 225 golden lotuses.
