The story

Pothundi Dam stands near Pothundi village in Palakkad district, about 8 km from Nemmara, 42 km from Palakkad and 17 km from Nelliampathi, with the Nelliampathi hills behind it. It spans the Meenichiladipuzha and Padipuzha, tributaries of the Aylampuzha, just above where they meet. Dating from the 19th century, it is counted among India's oldest dams, and its earthen core wall was made with a mix of jaggery and quicklime. It was developed into a medium irrigation project completed in 1971.

The earth dam is 32.6 metres high and 1,680 metres long, and its reservoir waters about 5,470 hectares of rice land and supplies drinking water to Nemmara and nearby villages. The teak-forested catchment feeds a reservoir stocked for fisheries, with rohu, catla, carp, murrel and other species. The Nemmara Vallengi Vela festival is held on its shores.
