The story

Chimmini Dam stands at Echippara in Chalakudy taluk, Thrissur district, across the Kurumali river, a tributary of the Karuvannur, and is the largest dam in the district. Built between 1975 and 1996, with a masonry section of 495 metres and an earthen one of 686 metres, it is unusual in having no canals of its own: water is let out through a regulator into the river and existing channels to reach the Kole lands and paddy fields. A small hydroelectric station produces about 6.7 million units of power a year.

The reservoir sits next to the Chimmini Wildlife Sanctuary, created in 1984 over roughly 85 square kilometres and joining the Peechi-Vazhani Sanctuary, and it borders Mangalam Dam and the Parambikulam reserve. Coracle rides run on the reservoir, and bamboo rafting, a birding trail, a butterfly safari, jungle craft and animal tracking are offered to visitors.
