01 — The story

The story

Thenari Sree Rama Temple stands in the green countryside of Palakkad district, off the Pollachi road. Local tradition says it was founded long ago by the sage Divakara Muni, a devotee of Rama, and that Hanuman helped the builders finish it when the work ran into trouble. Tipu Sultan of Mysore is also said to have paid respects at the shrine in the 18th century. A natural spring in front of the temple is believed to be as holy as the Ganges.

The gopuram at the entrance is carved with scenes from Hindu mythology, and carved pillars and ceilings surround the sanctum holding the image of Rama. One story tells of the oil lamp before the deity rising into the air and lighting the whole temple on a dark, stormy night.
