01 — The story

The story

Varikkasseri Mana is the ancestral home of the Varikkasseri family at Ottapalam in Palakkad district, a family counted among the Ashta Gruha, or eight leading households. The present house was built around 1902 by Varikkasseri Ravi Namboothirippad from locally made red brick. It has more than 74 rooms, two outhouses, a pond and a family temple, and its granary, the pathayapura, shows some Victorian features.

The mansion is known for its carved woodwork and pillars and for a large courtyard decorated with murals. Its setting has made it a favourite location for film crews, and films such as Devasuram, Aaraam Thampuran and Rappakal were shot here.
