The story

The Partition Museum in Delhi occupies the Dara Shukoh Library Building on the Kashmere Gate campus of Dr B. R. Ambedkar University, in Old Delhi. Inaugurated on 18 May 2023 by Delhi Education Minister Atishi, it is the second museum in India devoted to the stories of people who lived through the Partition of 1947, and has a counterpart in Amritsar. The building has its own past: part of Prince Dara Shukoh's palace, later home to Juliana Dias da Costa, bought by Safdarjung and then used as the East India Company's British Residency. Restored for the museum, it keeps its blend of Mughal and British styles.

Six galleries move from the run-up to Independence and Partition through migration and refuge to the rebuilding of homes and relationships, ending with hope and courage. Family heirlooms sit alongside archive material, photographs and artworks, with objects as everyday as tents, bed posts and locks, and instruments such as sitars.
