The story

Oottukulangara Bhagavathy Temple stands in Peruvemba village, Palakkad district, about 1.4 km from Peruvemba junction and 11 km from Palakkad town. Bhagavathy is the main deity, with Ganapathy and Ayyappan. The site was once a paddy field: legend says a ploughman's blade struck metal and blood flowed out, and an astrologer later declared the find a swayambhu idol of the goddess, so the landlord built a temple over it.

The sreekovil has no roof, and the idol sits beneath an Asoka tree that older residents say has not grown since their childhood. The chief festival, Patham Padhiyam or Chanthatam, usually falls in the last week of December, after 41 days of lamp-lighting from the start of Vrischikam; Chanthatam is also a key offering, made only at the morning puja. Navaratri is observed too, and the Peruvemba Vela is held not here but at Thoovaseri Mannam, the goddess's original seat.
