The story

Sree Oorpazhachi Kavu stands in Edakkad grama panchayat in Kerala's Kannur district. In the 1790s its keepers fled Tipu Sultan's looting with the idols and treasures and hid them in the Akkaraveettil Tharavad at Thalassery; the deities returned and were reconsecrated after Tipu left Malabar, and the family later gave its worship house to the temple. The temple was enlarged between 1845 and 1899. It was once the seat of the ooralar, an assembly of nine Nambiar families that governed the village, and their senior men still serve as hereditary trustees.

Bhagavathy, Sree Oorpazhachi Daivathar and Vettakkorumakan are the principal deities, with Shaiva, Vaishnava and Shakta sanctums in the inner courtyard. On the upper citadel, Mele Kottam, is the shrine of Thondachan, the guardian revered as Vishnu and Shiva in one form, where the Vellattom and Kaliyattom oracle dances are performed; Shani is also worshipped there.
