The story

Nishkalank Mahadev Temple is a Shiva shrine near Koliyak in Bhavnagar district, Gujarat, set within the waters of the Arabian Sea and reachable only at low tide. Hindu tradition holds that the Pandavas, on Krishna's advice, installed five Shivalingas here to atone for the sins of the Mahabharata war. The temple is said to have been built in the 18th century by Bhavsinhji Takhtasinhji, ruler of Bhavnagar, on the spot where Shiva appeared to him in a dream.

Pilgrims come chiefly when the tide is out and the lingas are visible and accessible, believing that prayer here washes away sin, and they make traditional prayers and offerings. A local trust manages the site, which sees large gatherings at Maha Shivratri and Navaratri and, despite its difficult position, draws visitors from across the region.
