01 — The story

The story

Takhteshwar Temple is a Shiva shrine built of marble on a hill inside Bhavnagar city. It takes its name from Maharaja Takhtsinhji of the Gohil Rajput dynasty, who came to the throne of the princely state in 1870 after the death of his father, Maharaja Jaswantsinhji.

A flight of marble steps climbs from the foot of the hill to the temple, and the views widen on the way up. From the courtyard the city spreads out below, with the Gulf of Khambhat visible beyond it. Local residents gather here in the evenings for the breeze and to watch the city lights come on, and early mornings are quiet.
