The story

Nauradehi Wildlife Sanctuary covers about 1,197 sq km across Sagar, Damoh and Narsinghpur districts, the largest sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh. Declared in 1975, it lies on the southern Vindhya hills at 400–600 m and straddles two great river basins: most of it drains through tributaries of the Ken towards the Yamuna, while streams in the south run to the Narmada. It has been studied as a possible home for reintroduced cheetahs.

The forest is dry deciduous, with teak, saja, sal, tendu and mahua. The Indian wolf is the keystone species; sloth bear, otter, nilgai, chinkara, chausingha, blackbuck and chital are among the other animals, while signs of tigers and leopards turn up only rarely. At least 150 bird species occur, including several vultures, and sarus cranes come in winter. Forest rest houses and department guides serve visitors, with Jabalpur and Bhopal as bases and railheads at Sagar, Damoh and Narsinghpur.
