The story

The Bade Baba Temple at Kundalpur, a Jain pilgrimage town about 35 km from Damoh, centres on an image of Adinath (Rishabhanatha) known as Bade Baba, which dates from the post-Gupta period. The first temple went up in the 8th century; an inscription of Vikram Samvat 1757 says Bhattaraka Surendrakirti found it again and his disciple rebuilt it from ruins with help from the Bundela ruler Chhatrasal.

A huge new temple in the Nagara style, with touches of modern Rajasthani design, was begun under the inspiration of Acharya Vidyasagar, and the image was moved into its sanctum in January 2006. On completion it is to stand 189 ft high, enough to make it the world's tallest Jain temple, and to be ringed by water. Its plan includes a garbhagriha, gudhamandapa, nrityamandapa and a 90 ft sahastrakuta jinalaya. A Panch Kalyanaka festival and Mahamastakabhisheka here in 2022 drew hundreds of thousands of devotees.
