The story

The Namantar Shahid Smarak on Kamptee Road, Nagpur, honours those who died in the Namantar Andolan, the 16-year campaign to rename Marathwada University after B. R. Ambedkar. When the renaming was first approved, riots broke out against it in July 1978, affecting some 25,000 Dalits and killing at least 27. The university was finally renamed Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University.

Nagpur's city government built the memorial in 2013 on 2,225 sq m at Indora Bridge 10, to a design by the sculptor Uday Gajbhiye, and it was inaugurated on Buddha Jayanti. The site was chosen because a boy protester, Avinash Dongre, was shot by police here on 4 August 1978, and four others died nearby. Twenty-seven sculptures show the Bhim Sainiks who died, caught in the act of struggle, alongside 27 name plaques and a monolith. A small theatre and a library on the movement's history stand close by.
