The story

Maharajbagh Zoo, the central zoo of Nagpur, is laid out in the middle of the city on the garden that once belonged to the Bhonsle Maratha rulers. It falls under the Central Zoo Authority of India and is run by the Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth in Nagpur. Its animals include leopards, lions, tigers and peacocks.

Among Indian zoos it is a small one, and it has long been short of money. In 2006 it faced possible closure because it lacked open enclosures and had other shortcomings, but funds from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation paid for open enclosures and a wall along a nearby nullah, after which the objections were cleared in 2007. A large new safari park near Gorewada Lake has been approved by the state, though Maharajbagh is meant to stay open.
