01 — The story

The story

Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Temple stands on the Saurashtra coast at Dwarka and holds one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the self-existent forms of Shiva. The linga sits in a sanctum below ground level. It is carved from Dwarka Shila stone, bears small chakras and has the shape of a three-faced rudraksha; the Shiva Purana says worship here protects against poison and snakebite. A seated Shiva statue 80 feet tall rises at the site, the temple plan follows Vaastu Shastra, and excavations point to five earlier cities on this spot.

According to legend, the demon Daruka tortured Supriya, a devotee who would not show him how to worship Shiva. Her chanting brought Shiva, who killed Daruka and stayed on here as Nageshwar.
