01 — The story

The story

Ghumli, a village about 42 km from Porbandar, holds the ruins of a former royal seat. It was the capital of the Saindhava dynasty in the 8th century and, under the earlier name Bhumli, became, in the 12th century, the second capital of the Jethwa ruler Rana Shiyaji. Its centrepiece is the Navlakha Temple, a 12th-century Sun temple in the Solanki style, said to be the oldest in Gujarat; carvings of three elephants with interlocking tusks are its signature, and its name recalls a building cost of nine lakh.

Nearby are a 10th-century Ganesh temple, damaged when Jadeja Jam Barmaniyaji attacked Ghumli in 1313, and the Vikai Vav and Jetha Vav stepwells. Vikai Vav, built by the ruler Vikiaji, measures 60 by 40.5 metres. About 700 steps lead to the hilltop Ashapura Mata temple.
