The story

Beyt Dwarka, also spelt Bet Dwarka, is an island in the Arabian Sea off Okha, revered by Hindus as a home of Krishna. Its name comes from 'bet', a gift, after the present Krishna is said to have received here from his friend Sudama. It is also called Shankhodhar for its conch-like outline, and the Mahabharata calls it Antardvipa, an island the Yadavas reached by boat. A Krishna temple founded by Vallabhacharya is its main shrine.

The island served as the old port of Krishna's kingdom, later came under the Gaekwads and joined Saurashtra after independence. Excavations have turned up earthenware, a copper fishhook, a jar bearing an inscription and a seal of the late Harappan period, while old stone anchors point to trade with Arabia and Rome.
