01 — The story

The story

The Musheerabad Mosque, also called Masjid-e-Kalan or the Musheerabad Badi Masjid, is in the Musheerabad area of Hyderabad. Its original part was built in 1560 by Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah, the fourth Qutb Shahi sultan, and matches the Hayat Bakshi Mosque at Hayathnagar.

After the fall of Golconda the mosque was abandoned until the area became the estate of Nawab Arastu Jah, prime minister under Nizam Ali Khan, and it was repaired in 1951. The old building, in Qutb Shahi style with five lofty arches and two corner minarets, is now in a dilapidated state. A new four-storey block, built where a large courtyard once was, now holds the worshippers.
