The story

Muchhal Mahavir Temple is a Shvetambara Jain temple dedicated to Mahavira at Ghanerao in Pali district, Rajasthan, on the way from Falna to Kumbhalgarh. With Ranakpur, Narlai, Nadol and Varkana it makes up the Gorwad Panch Tirth, and a fair is held every year on the thirteenth day of Chaitra.

Jain legend tells how Rana Raj Singh I of Mewar, offering saffron to the idol, found a white hair on it. The priest claimed it came from Mahavira's moustache, and when the Rana demanded to see it, the priest fasted for three days until the guardian deity made a moustache appear. When the Rana pulled it out, milk flowed from the spot, and he became a devoted follower; the image has since been called Muchhal Mahavir, the moustached Mahavira. The temple is in the Nagara style, with a curving tower of many turrets, ornate pillars and an intricately carved torana, and two large black elephants stand outside the door. A dharamshala and bhojanalaya serve pilgrims.
