The story

Mithranandapuram Vamanamoorthy Temple stands at Cherpu in Thrissur district, Kerala, less than half a kilometre west of Perumbillissery bus stop. Legend holds that its idol is more than 1,500 years old. The deity is Vamana, the dwarf avatar of Vishnu, of the legend of the three paces of land, and he is shown here in the mood of blessing King Mahabali. Ganesha, a swamiyar (guru) and Annapoorneswari are also worshipped here.

Three Namboodiri families own the temple, and its chief priests come from the Nedumpilly Tharananellur Mana of Irinjalakuda. The main festival is the Othu Kottu, or Sampoorna Yajurveda Yajna, held once every three years, when Yajurveda scholars from across Kerala recite the entire text; ten local Namboodiri families organise it with the help of devotees. The temple is open from 5.30 to 10.30 am and 5.30 to 7.30 pm, with changes on special days.
