Meja Dam, about 20 km from Bhilwara in Rajasthan, is one of the largest dams in the district and is best known for its Green Mount Park. Before Independence the area was ruled by the Purawat Rajputs, a branch of the Sisodia clan.
The reservoir was long the main source of drinking water for Bhilwara and the country around it, but inflows fell sharply after 1996 and in 2007–09 were a small fraction of its design capacity. The likely cause is the unplanned building of many small ponds in its catchment, while more than 27,000 anicuts have gone up across the district. In August 2016 the water in the dam was reported to have risen to 28.9 ft.
