Meherabad, in Arangaon village about 9 km south of Ahmednagar, is the spiritual retreat that Meher Baba founded as an ashram in 1923, and it holds his Samadhi Mandir. Upper Meherabad has the samadhi itself, the tombs of the women mandali, museums and amphitheatres, while lower Meherabad keeps the dhuni site, the original well and neem tree, Baba's table-house and jhopdi, the tomb of Gilori Shah and a memorial tower opened in 2019.
The biggest event is Amartithi, the 'deathless day', which marks Meher Baba's entombment on 31 January 1969. Over three days tens of thousands of followers arrive from around the world, and at 12:15 pm on the day the crowd keeps fifteen minutes of silence while his flag flies over Meherabad. The dhuni fire is worshipped on the 12th of each month. Pilgrims stay at the Meher Pilgrim Center and Retreat, closed from 15 March to 15 June, or in hostels and a dharamshala.
