The story

Shani Shingnapur is a village in Nevasa taluka of Ahmednagar district, about 35 kilometres from Ahmednagar, known for its temple to Shani, the god linked with the planet Saturn. The deity is a swayambhu, a self-manifested black stone, and the shrine is considered a jagrut devasthan, a living temple where the god is present.

Tradition says shepherds once prodded a large black stone with a pointed rod and it began to bleed; that night Shani appeared to the most devout of them in a dream and revealed the stone as his own form. The village is equally known for its houses, which have door frames but no doors, as residents believe Shani punishes anyone who steals. Officially no theft was recorded for years, although cases were reported in 2010 and 2011.
