01 — The story

The story

The Mata Lal Devi Temple in Amritsar honours Lal Devi, a woman saint of the 20th century remembered for living only on milk and fruit. Many of the women who come here pray for children, and the temple draws a steady flow of pilgrims from across the region.

The interior is known for its mirror work: the inner sanctum, called the Sheesh Mahal, is lined with small mirrors and bright colours. Statues, carvings and paintings around the halls tell the story of the saint's life. The approach to the main shrine runs through an artificial cave, where devotees go on their knees or crawl as an act of humility before reaching the deity.
