Ram Bagh is a historic garden in central Amritsar laid out by Maharaja Ranjit Singh and named by him after Guru Ram Das, the fourth Sikh Guru and founder of the city. The Maharaja came often to Amritsar, close to his capital at Lahore, and between 1819 and 1831 he built a summer palace here set in gardens modelled on Lahore's Shalimar Bagh. After the fall of the Sikh state the British took it over and called it Company Bagh. It is now a Monument of National Importance.
The two-storey summer palace with a basement now holds the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum, and a hammam, or bath house, with a large pool stands beside it. The main gateway, or deorhi, faces Harmandir Sahib from the south, with a plainer one to the north. Only the foundations of the outer walls survive, but watchtowers still stand at the four corners. Other buildings include the Munshikhana for court staff, a darbar staff block that the British used as an aquarium called Machhi Ghar, and a red sandstone baradari. Today the lawns and flowerbeds attract walkers, birdwatchers and cultural events.
