The story

Known too as the Jama Masjid, the Masjid-i-Ala stands inside the fort at Srirangapatna in Mandya district. Tipu Sultan built it near his palace in 1786–87, a few years after taking charge of the fort in 1782. Three inscriptions in the mosque record the nine names of the Prophet Muhammad and name Tipu as its builder, and the complex also contains a madrasa and a cloister of rooms.

The fort itself is believed to date from 1454, when the Vijayanagara governor Timmanna Nayaka built it, and it passed through the Wodeyars and others before Hyder Ali and then Tipu made it their stronghold. British forces stormed it on 4 May 1799, and Tipu died in the fighting. The mosque is a Monument of National Importance, looked after by the Archaeological Survey of India.
