The story

Masjid-e-Rasheed, also called the Jame Rashid or Taj Masjid, is a Friday mosque within the campus of Darul Uloom Deoband in Saharanpur district. It is named after Rasheed Ahmad Gangohi, the seminary's second patron. Donations poured in once building began, so the original, simpler plan was enlarged, and the mosque took twenty years to complete.

Its 37-metre dome rises between two minarets 55 metres high, and five doors open into a prayer space for 20,000 people. Long galleries flank the central gate, and outside are wide grounds, a small pond and a flower garden. On moonlit nights its white stone is said to recall the Taj Mahal, and visitors of all faiths come to see it. The Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind leader Asad Madani used to spend the Ramzan retreat of itikaf here with hundreds of followers, a practice his son continues.
