The story

Maragadachaleswarar Temple is at Eengoimalai, also written Thiruengoimalai, in Trichy district. Shiva is worshipped here as Maragadachaleswarar or Eengoinathar, and the goddess as Maragadambikai.

A legend tells of a contest between Vayu, the wind god, and the serpent Adisesha. Adisesha coiled around Kailash, and Vayu raised a great storm to break his hold; eight peaks broke off and fell to earth, one of them at Thiruengoimalai, others at Thirukalahasti, Thiruchiramalai and Thirugonamalai in Sri Lanka. The temple is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams. Tirugnanasambandar composed a verse in praise of its deity.
