The story

The Tropical Butterfly Conservatory covers 25 acres of the Upper Anaicut reserve forest at Srirangam, Tiruchirappalli, in the basin of the Cauvery and Kollidam rivers. Announced in 2012 and opened on 13 November 2015, it is billed as the largest butterfly park in Asia. An outer conservatory gives butterflies breeding habitat in near-natural conditions, helped by an artificial lake, while the indoor conservatories use greenhouses, air conditioning and lighting designed to attract butterflies.

The Butterfly Park is the recreational side, with lawns, flower beds of nectar and host plants, a large butterfly glasshouse, a 1.2 km walkway, suspended bridges, fountains and a pond with boating for children. A big blue tiger butterfly sculpture greets visitors on the entrance lawn. The Nakshatravanam has trees for the 27 stars and 12 zodiac signs of Indian astrology, meant to encourage people to plant the tree linked to their star.
