The story

Mahamaya Dham, the temple of the goddess Mahamaya at Bogribari, lies in the Parbatjhora subdivision of Kokrajhar district, about 30 km east of Dhubri and 10 km west of Bilasipara. It is regarded as the foremost Shakta shrine of Lower Assam, and among pilgrims and tourists in the region it is second only to the Kamakhya Temple. The goddess was traditionally worshipped by local Kachari, Koch and Nath communities and was the presiding deity of the zamindar of Parbatjowar; today Hindus across Lower Assam revere her.

The temple keeps a 400-year tradition of animal sacrifice, especially at Durga Puja, though animal lovers now speak out against it. A few kilometres away, on the bank of the Tipkai River, is the Mahamaya Snaanghat Temple, where the goddess is believed to have bathed; a Shakti Yagya is performed there each January.
