The story

Raimona National Park lies in the far west of Assam, in the Gossaigaon and Kokrajhar subdivisions of Kokrajhar district in the Bodoland Territorial Region. It grew out of proposals to protect the Ripu and Chirang reserved forests for their elephants, gaur and golden langurs. Its forest runs unbroken into two protected areas in Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park and the Phibsoo sanctuary, part of a cross-border conservation area recognised by both countries in 2010, and it also cushions Manas National Park and Buxa Tiger Reserve.

About 380 kinds of plants and orchids grow here. Primates include golden langurs, slow lorises and Assamese macaques, and the larger animals range from tigers, leopards and clouded leopards to elephants, gaur, serow and several deer. The park is an Important Bird Area, with great pied and wreathed hornbills, white-bellied herons, swamp francolins, lesser adjutants and hill mynas among its birds.
