The story

Maa Khadgeshwari Kali Mandir in Araria, Bihar, is a Hindu temple to the goddess Kali that draws pilgrims from Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal as well as from neighbouring Nepal, who come hoping she will grant their wishes. At 152 feet (46 m), it is claimed to be the tallest Kali temple in the world, and Lord Shiva has a place in the same premises.

The idol of the goddess was first kept in a hut in 1884, and local reports consider the temple to be over 200 years old. The present priest and patron, Sarojanand Dixit, known as Nanu Baba and once a football player, has managed the temple and its worship since the early 1970s. He began the drive for the present building in 1987, and it was finished in 2011 with donations, crowdfunding and public charity. Tuesdays and Saturdays bring special prayers, when kheer or khichdi is offered as prasad and shared among devotees.
