Harahi Lake is a tank close to Darbhanga Railway Station in Bihar, one of three lying in a row with Dighi Lake and Ganga Sagar Lake, linked by a drive and together stretching 6,000 feet. Harahi measures about 1,600 by 1,000 feet. One theory holds that the tanks were dug to provide raised ground for soldiers' quarters, since the town is thought to have once been a Muslim cantonment.
Local tradition tells another story. During Raja Siva Singh's reign, a kite snatched a fish from a fisherwoman's basket, and her daughter-in-law burst out laughing. Pressed by the Raja, she explained that in a past life she had been a kite that, during the Mahabharata war, carried off a woman's arm wearing a golden bracelet of 80 maunds and ate it here; she then died. The Raja had tanks dug until the arm bone and bracelet were found, and the tank was named Harahi, the bone tank.
