The story

The Chandradhari Museum in Darbhanga, Bihar, was set up by the state government on 7 December 1957 as the Mithila Museum. It grew from the private collection of Babu Chandradhari Singh, a zamindar of Ranti Dodhi in Madhubani district, whose family donated his objects, and it was later renamed after him. First housed on the eastern bank of Mansarowar Lake, it moved to its present two-storey building in 1974.

Eleven galleries each hold a different kind of object. Among the paintings are rare miniatures in several styles, a Krishna Leela with the gopis based on Jayadeva's Gita Govinda, and works illustrating the Ramayana. There are brass statues in Indian, Nepalese and Tibetan styles, including Durga, Surya and Shiva, Buddhist figures, glasswork, fine weaving, old guns, and a natural history section of gems and stones. The museum also has a library.
