The story

This memorial at Gohain Gaon in Meleng Hulungapar, about 15 kilometres from Jorhat railway station, honours Lachit Borphukan. He was the Ahom commander whose leadership at the Battle of Saraighat in 1671 held back the Mughal army and protected the Ahom kingdom.

The centrepiece is a marble mausoleum built in his memory. A museum on the grounds tells the story of his campaigns and command, and a landscaped garden surrounds a statue of Bir Lachit Borphukan.
