Assam Agricultural University set up this botanical garden in Jorhat in 1969 as a centre for studying the region's plants. It holds both native and introduced species, a range that reflects Assam's position where the Indo-Burmese and Indo-Malayan biogeographic regions meet.
The grounds are divided into sections for medicinal, ornamental and rare plants. The medicinal section includes neem, tulsi and lesser-known local herbs used in Ayurveda, and the orchid collection features the foxtail orchid. Greenhouses and nurseries raise rare and threatened species, some areas let native plants grow in near-natural conditions, and seeds of rare plants are stored for future restoration work.
