01 — The story

The story

Sukapha Samannay Kshetra at Mohbandha, near Dergaon and Jorhat, is a memorial park and cultural centre dedicated to Chaolung Sukapha, the first Ahom king. It also marks the roughly 600 years during which the Ahom dynasty ruled Assam. Legend holds that Sukapha descended from the heavenly god Khunlung.

A museum on the site displays artefacts of the Ahoms and other Assamese communities, covering the region's political, cultural and religious past. Outside, a life-size statue of Sukapha stands in a park with an amphitheatre and landscaped gardens.
