The story

Kundadri is a densely forested hill of 826 metres in the Western Ghats of Shivamogga district, about 20 kilometres from Thirthahalli. It is a Jain holy place linked to Acharya Kundakunda, the great Digambara teacher who is believed to have stayed here more than two thousand years ago, and from whom the hill's sanctity is said to derive.

On top stands a 17th-century temple to Parshvanatha, the 23rd tirthankara, with stone figures of Jain sages. Two small rock pools beside it once supplied water to the ascetics who lived here. The state government and a Mumbai philanthropist built an all-weather road to the summit. Its remoteness has had a downside: treasure hunters have damaged some of the statues. The usual approach is via Thirthahalli and the Agumbe road, turning off at Guddekeri.
