The story

Kodimoottil Sri Bhadrakali Temple, the most famous shrine of Parippally, is in Kollam district of Kerala. Bhadrakali is the principal deity, with Shiva, Ganapathi and the Navagrahas installed as secondary deities. The temple is run by the Ezhava (Chekavar) community, though people of every caste join in its festivals.

The mahotsavam is held each March over ten days. It begins with pongala, in which women from across Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram districts take part, and reaches its high point on the final day with the gajamela, a procession of elephants that is the main draw of the celebrations. Navaratri is also observed here as a festival.
