01 — The story

The story

Khairuddin Masjid, also called the Jama Masjid of Amritsar, stands in the centre of the city. Muhammad Khairuddin built it in 1876, and it remains one of the main mosques of Amritsar.

The mosque also has a place in the freedom struggle: from its pulpit the preacher Syed Ataullah Shah Bukhari, nicknamed Tooti-e-Hind (Voice of India), called on people to rise against British rule. The building follows the arcuate system, with arches carrying the load over doors and windows. Its white walls carry fine green painted detail and inscriptions of Quranic verses in calligraphy.
