The Kali Masjid, or Jumma Masjid, stands in the middle of Old Jalna and dates from 1578 CE, in the time of the Nizam Shahi dynasty. It is called the black mosque because it is built of black stone, quarried from ground to the west where the Moti Talab was then dug. A Persian inscription over the well-kept entrance records the date of construction, and the mosque is a draw for visitors to the region.
The mosque stands in a rectangular walled compound entered through a large stone gate with white-painted stone screens. Octagonal columns carry six small domes inside, and the main dome is decorated with carved stone lotus leaves. A large square tank in the middle was once filled through underground pipes from Moti Talab. A hammam with domed rooms was added five years later, and opposite is a sarai, a paved court ringed by arcades. The mosque holds about 700 worshippers.
