The story

Kadampuzha Devi Temple at Kadampuzha in Malappuram district is a Hindu pilgrimage centre where Parvati is worshipped as a huntress. The goddess has no idol: she is worshipped in a pit, and Ganesha is believed to be present with her. There are sub-shrines to Sastha and the serpent deities, and a separate Shiva temple called Madambiyarkavu stands nearby; both are run by the Malabar Devaswom Board.

The legend comes from the Mahabharata. While Arjuna did penance here for the Pashupatastra, Shiva and Parvati came as hunters to test him, and a dispute arose when Shiva and Arjuna shot the same boar, the demon Mukasura in disguise. With no sopanam before the sanctum, devotees can stand at its doorstep to watch their offerings being made. The main offerings are Poomoodal and Muttarukkal, and an eight-day Rigveda Laksharchana is held in the month of Dhanu.
