The story

Juna Mahal, also called the Old Palace or Garh Palace, stands at the foot of Dhanmata Hill in Dungarpur and still belongs to the former royal family. The first palace here dates from the late 13th century, and successive Maharawals added wings, floors, courtyards and defences until it reached seven storeys on a high platform of pareva stone. Fortified walls, watchtowers and narrow passages give it the look of a citadel. One wall holds a shrine to the two wives of Dungaria, after whom the town was named. The rulers lived here until the mid-20th century, when they moved to Udai Bilas Palace, and in 2014 it was placed on the World Monuments Watch.

The interiors are known for murals painted over several centuries, including work by Devji between 1864 and 1875 and later by artists from Nathdwara such as Kanhaiyalal. Highlights include the Am Khas audience hall, the glass-inlaid Shish ka Kamara, and the Chini Gokhada, a balcony set with 144 Staffordshire Blue Willow Pattern plates.
