The story

The Jama Masjid in Nainital, in the Kumaon division of Uttarakhand, is a Friday mosque built in the British period for Muslim soldiers of the British Indian Army. Accounts of its date differ: construction is said to have begun in 1865, while it is also described as built in 1882. The main entrance bears Arabic inscriptions.

The mosque has been renovated more than once, in 1996–97 and again in 2004–05. Lack of space had forced worshippers to pray on the road outside, disrupting traffic, and Kishan Negi, president of the local Chamber of Commerce in the late 1990s, contributed towards the renovation.
