01 — The story

The story

The Governor's House in Nainital, also called Raj Bhavan, was completed in 1899 to designs by F.W. Steven as a summer residence for the Governor of the North West Province. Built in Victorian Gothic style on the model of British palaces, it has 113 rooms on an estate of 220 acres and still serves as the Governor's home, with parts open on guided tours.

The facade combines grey marble, dolomite limestone and red sandstone. Floors are laid in teak, shisham and satinwood, while pine and cypress were used for stairs, doors and windows. The grounds include gardens, a swimming pool and a 45-acre golf course from 1936 affiliated to the Indian Golf Union. Jhandidhar Modi Heights and Munshi Heights inside the estate serve as viewpoints.
