The story

Nainital Zoo stands on Sher Ka Danda Hill at around 2,100 metres and is one of just three high-altitude zoos in India. Established in 1984 and opened to visitors in 1995, it has carried the official name Pt. Govind Ballabh Pant High Altitude Zoo since 2002. The grounds cover 4.6 hectares.

Animals include the Royal Bengal tiger, Tibetan wolf and Japanese macaque, along with birds such as the golden pheasant and hill partridge. Many animals are adopted by individuals and organisations. The zoo runs conservation education for students and residents, with quizzes, painting and debate contests around World Environment Day, Ozone Day and Wildlife Week from 1 to 7 October.
