Bhimtal Lake, a short drive from Nainital through the Kumaon hills, is the largest lake in Nainital district. Legend credits its creation to Bhima, one of the Pandava brothers, who is said to have formed it with a blow of his elbow. Forested slopes border its green water, and migratory birds arrive in winter.
Pedal boats and rowing boats take visitors out to an island in the middle, where an aquarium café keeps more than 12 large tanks of imported fish. Cycling routes follow the shore, water zorbing is offered on the lake, and hiking trails run into the surrounding woods.
