The story

Indralath (Indralatha) Temple is a Shiva temple close to Ranipur-Jharial, in the Bangomunda block of Odisha's Balangir district. Its name reflects a belief that Indra first worshipped Shiva here and raised a temple. Built of brick, it is dated to the 10th–11th centuries under the Somavamshi dynasty, and is described as the tallest brick temple in Odisha and the only one surviving in the region. The Archaeological Survey of India now maintains it.

The jagamohana and other buildings have gone, leaving only the rekha-style vimana. Inside, a recently installed linga sits with older images of Vishnu, Kartikeya and Uma-Maheshwara, while the original linga, displaced in an attack, lies outside. Figures of Nrisimha, Vishnu, Ganesh and Kartikeya, and the mixed Shaiva and Vaishnava decoration of the outer walls, point to Harihara worship. A local priest performs daily puja, and Shivaratri is celebrated every year.
